The GoodWe GW8.5K-MS-G40 single-phase solar inverter is an 8.5 kW string inverter belonging to the fourth generation of the MS G4 series. It is specially designed for residential photovoltaic installations that require high power and flexibility in panel configuration, incorporating 3 independent MPPT trackers with one PV input per MPPT.
Thanks to its 20 A maximum current per MPPT, compatibility with PV oversizing of up to 200%, and a maximum efficiency of 97.9%, the GW8.5K-MS-G40 is ready to work with modern high-power photovoltaic modules. Its design is completed with IP66 protection, natural convection cooling, and acoustic operation below 30 dB.
The GoodWe GW8.5K-MS-G40 provides a nominal and maximum output power of 8,500 W, with a maximum apparent power of 8,500 VA. It is designed for single-phase 220, 230, or 240 V electrical grids and operates at a nominal frequency of 50 or 60 Hz.
One of its main strengths is the inclusion of 3 independent MPPT trackers. Each MPPT supports one photovoltaic string, allowing the solar array to be divided into up to three groups with different operating conditions.
This architecture is especially interesting for roofs with multiple orientations, different tilts, or areas with different irradiation conditions, since each string has its own maximum power point tracking.
Each of the three MPPTs supports a maximum input current of 20 A and a maximum short-circuit current of 26 A. These specifications improve compatibility with current high-power, high-current photovoltaic modules.
The maximum PV input voltage is 600 V, while the MPPT operating range is between 40 and 560 V. The start-up voltage is only 50 V and the nominal input voltage reaches 360 V.
GoodWe specifies PV oversizing of up to 200% for the MS G4 series. This feature allows a module power higher than the inverter's nominal output power to be connected, provided that the voltages, currents, and other electrical limits set by the manufacturer are respected.
Oversizing the photovoltaic array can help increase the hours during which the inverter operates close to its optimal power, especially during periods of low irradiation, early morning, or late afternoon.
The GW8.5K-MS-G40 achieves a maximum efficiency of 97.9% and a European efficiency of 97.3%, enabling highly efficient conversion of the direct current energy from the panels into alternating current usable by the installation.
The maximum output current is 38.7 A. The power factor is approximately 1 and can be adjusted between 0.8 capacitive and 0.8 inductive. The maximum total harmonic distortion indicated by GoodWe is below 3%.
GoodWe equips the GW8.5K-MS-G40 with different protection and monitoring functions on both the DC and AC sides.
The MS G4 series can optionally incorporate AFCI 3.0, a function for detecting and interrupting DC electrical arcs. GoodWe uses artificial intelligence-assisted technology to identify arc-compatible situations and act on the system.
This feature provides an additional safety option for installations where protection against certain arc faults in the photovoltaic array is required.
The GoodWe GW8.5K-MS-G40 offers different communication options for monitoring and integrating the installation. The datasheet includes RS485, WiFi, LAN, Bluetooth, and 4G interfaces, depending on the configuration and accessories used.
The communication protocol is Modbus RTU compatible with SunSpec. The unit interface uses LED indicators and supports an optional LCD display, as well as management via WLAN and a compatible app.
The MS G4 series can be used in mixed parallel installations together with GoodWe DNS G4 inverters via the EzLink3000 smart communication module.
This capability makes it easier to expand photovoltaic installations modularly when increasing installed power is required while maintaining a compatible GoodWe inverter architecture.
The GW8.5K-MS-G40 uses natural convection cooling. Since it does not rely on fans for normal cooling, GoodWe states an acoustic emission below 30 dB.
This feature is especially suitable for residential installations where the inverter may be located close to living spaces. The unit's nighttime consumption is below 1 W.
The enclosure has an IP66 protection rating, providing high resistance against dust and water ingress. This increases flexibility when selecting the inverter location, always following the installation instructions and clearances indicated by GoodWe.
The operating temperature range is between -25 and +60 °C and it supports relative humidity from 0 to 100%. The maximum operating altitude indicated by the manufacturer is 4,000 meters.
With dimensions of 493 x 365 x 187 mm and a weight of 16 kg, the GoodWe GW8.5K-MS-G40 offers a compact format considering its 8.5 kW power and three MPPT trackers.
The DC inputs use MC4 connectors compatible with cable cross-sections from 4 to 6 mm². The AC connection uses a Plug & Play system that supports a maximum conductor cross-section of 16 mm².
The inclusion of three independent MPPTs makes the GoodWe GW8.5K-MS-G40 especially suitable for installations where photovoltaic panels must be distributed across different roof sections, orientations, or tilts. Each string can have independent tracking to optimize its operating point.
Its 8.5 kW single-phase power, 20 A per MPPT, PV oversizing of up to 200%, maximum efficiency of 97.9%, IP66 protection, and extensive communication options make the GW8.5K-MS-G40 a complete solution for high-power residential solar installations.
Important: string sizing and connected PV power must always comply with the voltages, currents, and other limits established by GoodWe, as well as the regulations applicable to the installation.
